Former NH detective sentenced for theft

Posted by: IAPE May 24, 2011

SECTION: STATE AND REGIONAL

Farmington, NH

A former New Hampshire police detective has been sentenced to at least three months in jail for stealing nearly $4,000 from the Farmington police station’s evidence room.

Foster’s Daily Democrat reports 28-year-old Brendon June of Middleton was sentenced in Strafford County Superior Court on Monday on one count of theft. He was sentenced to a year in jail with nine months suspended.

The charge was the result of an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office regarding June’s activities while a detective with the Farmington Police Department. The investigation showed he stole $3,790 from the evidence room.

June has paid the money back, relinquished his certification as a police office, and resigned.

Farmington, NH

DOVER — Jury selection for the case against a former Farmington police detective alleged to have stolen over $1,000 from the station’s evidence room has been scheduled for April 4, 2011.

A preliminary pretrial conference for Brendan June, 27, of 148 Nicola Road in Middleton, was held in Strafford County Superior Court on Wednesday. June was indicted in June on a felony charge of theft by unauthorized taking for allegedly removing more than $1,000 from the police station evidence room between Nov. 1, 2009 and May 8, 2010.

In addition, a final pretrial hearing was scheduled for March 24, 2011 for June’s case. June entered a not guilty plea on his behalf when he was arraigned in Superior Court on June 29.

Farmington Police Chief Scott Roberge said earlier this year that June is no longer with the department. He said no other members of the force were involved in the theft.

Roberge previously said the department discovered some items missing from the evidence room and once they learned of the theft, the Attorney General’s office was informed.

June was hired by the Farmington Police Department on June, 16, 2006 and his last day with them was May 10, according to Training Specialist Tim Merrill of the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council.

Merrill said June is no longer certified by the council because his certification lapsed when he was out of law enforcement for 30 days. If June is convicted of the felony against him, it would obviously show up his record if he reapplied for certification, according to Merrill.

June’s felony charge is a Class A felony that carries a maximum penalty of 7 1?2 to 15 years in state prison and a $4,000 fine. The case is being prosecuted by the state Attorney General’s Office.
